Comparative Study on the Finer Structure of Basement Membrane of the Human, Rabbit and Corneal Epithelium
Yoo Sang-Hee

Abstract
This study presents a closer observation on finer structure of the corneal epithelial basement membrane of human, rabbit and rat. 1. Fine fibrils radiate from hemidesmosomes across the space between the cell membrane and the basement membrane to join the latter, and extend into Bowman¡¯s layer with poor demarcation. Basement membrane is a well defined layer measuring 570A¢ª(human), 550A¢ª(rabbit) and 490A¢ª(rat) in thickness, and seperated from the basal membrane by lucent zone 280A¢ª(rabbit) and 250A¢ª(rat) in width. 2. Basement membrane is composed of unilaminar membrane in fetal stage, and it undergoes an age related increase in thickness. 3. Basement membrane is of utmost importance in epithelial regeneration, and loss basement membrane delay the epithelial adhesion and wound healing.
